We Bought a Bus!

Updated: Apr 4, 2019

For about a year we had been thinking, talking, dreaming and (okay, we’ll say it!) obsessing, over the van life movement. We watched the youtube videos, we browsed auto trader, we followed the instagram accounts and we had made our decision. Because if not now, when?

In the few months before making the jump we went back and forth wondering if this was the right decision. We thought we should be sensible, we should save our money, we should work to get on the property ladder. But we decided, just because society has told us that we should do all of these things doesn’t mean we have to and it definitely doesn’t mean we want to, at least not just yet.

The biggest attraction to van life for us, is the freedom. The endless possibilities and the chance to quite literally take the road less travelled. We have lived in England all our lives but we haven't yet seen all the natural beauty this island has to offer. So we'll start with the UK as our back garden before seeing what the rest of this beautiful world has to offer.

When it came to choosing a van for our tiny home on wheels, Adele focused on the aesthetics and Rob focused on the reliability of the vehicle. After A LOT of research we decided that we were going to go with a Mercedes Sprinter LWB. We knew that it would have to accommodate a fixed bed, a shower/toilet, a seating area and a kitchen. The head room to stand up and the dimensions for our ideal layout. Purchasing a sprinter as the van of choice was going to be the responsible decision for our outrageous project.

Whilst searching we stumbled across an old school minibus… very different to the sprinter to say the least. But we fell in love, two days later we had been to see it, put the deposit down and well, the rest is history…

Our yet to be named tiny home on wheels is a 2006 LDV convoy, with 17 seats it started life as a school minibus and has the bright yellow stickers to prove it… It has a 2.4Di transit engine and 45,000 miles on the clock. Not bad for a 13 year old vehicle.

Our plan is to transform our school bus into a cosy, warm and comfortable home so we can hit the road as soon as possible! We are really excited to be starting this adventure and would love for you to come along for the ride. We’ll be documenting the conversion and all things van life on this platform so be sure to keep an eye out for new content and in the meantime, feel free to check out our instagram.
